Inspired by real life experiences, Other Wise Hearts is a series of gripping and heartfelt stories that explodes common myths and explores the rich, complex and often misunderstood reality of autism – especially in women and girls.
The inspiration for this book came after my autism diagnosis. I wanted to explore the many different ways of being Autistic and to challenge the stereotypes so often portrayed on TV and in social media. I also hoped to confront some harmful myths –such as the idea that we lack empathy, aren’t creative, or don’t seek connection. To get a greater understanding, I spoke with a number of people who discovered their autism later in life. Through these powerful conversations, common themes began to emerge. Each story was unique, yet there were striking overlaps that revealed just how varied – and how deeply connected – our lives can be.
Other Wise Hearts explores those organically evolving themes through a series of intertwined tales inspired by the real-life stories of the people I spoke to and invites the reader into the emotional landscape of autism, offering not only understanding but a profound sense of connection and belonging.
Other Wise Hearts is more than a novel—it’s a lyrical and unflinching exploration of neurodivergence, a celebration of difference, and a beacon for those who’ve spent their lives feeling like outsiders.
‘As Senara steps out onto the frozen sea, ready to surrender herself to its icy depths, a strange witch appears and begins to conjure stories in the swirling sand – tales of monsters, courage and victory, of young heroes using gifts to overcome impossible odds.
Senara insists the stories have no place in her world. But the witch holds firm: these aren’t just legends; they are clues, leading Senara to a truth buried deep within her.
Now as darkness looms and danger circles, Senara must make an impossible choice: face her deepest fear and the pain it brings —or turn away and lose herself forever.’
